The Numbers
|
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 428 children ages 5-9 were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2001. Of these, 203 were unrestrained, and 183 were too small for the adult safety belts that were in use. But let's focus in on the prime booster seat appropriate ages of six and seven years old - 94 of these kids died while restrained in the adult belt, 85 killed were unrestrained - while amazingly only one American child that year was known to have been killed despite being secured in a booster seat. In addition, nearly 57,000 children in this age group were injured despite wearing safety belts.
