| Rising crude oil prices have again translated into higher prices at the gas pumps, with prices in Rhode Island jumping another ten cents per gallon in the last week, reaching another record high, according to AAA Southern New England. AAA’s May 12 survey of prices in Rhode Island found self-serve, regular unleaded averaging $3.709 per gallon, up ten cents from last week and 57 cents since the start of the year. Rhode Island is currently one cent below the national average of self-serve regular of $3.71. A year ago at this time the average price of regular unleaded gasoline in Rhode Island was $2.989. The range in prices in the latest local AAA survey for unleaded regular is 15 cents, from a low of $3.649 to a high of $3.799. Diesel rose seven cents last week to $4.46. AAA advises motorists to shop around for the best prices in their area, and to make sure they and their passengers buckle up — every time. Today’s local gas prices and their ranges are as follows: Regular Unleaded - Self Serve/Full Serve $3.709 ($3.649-$3.799)/$3.779 ($3.759-$3.799) Midgrade Unleaded - Self Serve/Full Serve $3.829 ($3.769-$3.929)/$3.899 ($3.859-$3.949) Premium Unleaded - Self Serve/Full Serve $3.939 ($3.869-$4.059)/$4.029 ($3.999-$4.049) Diesel - Self Serve/Full Serve $4.469 ($4.399-$4.519)/$4.499 ($4.459-$4.499) AAA Fuel Saving Tip of the Week Slow down. The faster you drive, the more gas you use. If your average commute includes 20 miles of highway time and you drive at 60 miles per hour instead of 70, you’ll save approximately 1.3 gallons of gas in a five-day work week.
