| For the fourth straight week, gasoline prices in Massachusetts are trending downward, this time falling an average of five cents, according to AAA Southern New England. AAA’s September 28 survey of prices in Massachusetts found self-serve, regular unleaded averaging $2.519 per gallon, down five cents from last week and thirteen cents in the last four weeks. The current price is two cents above the national average for self serve unleaded of $2.49, and is 96 cents less than the $3.47 found this time a year ago. The range in prices in the latest AAA survey for unleaded regular is 51 cents, from a low of $2.289 to a high of $2.799. AAA advises motorists to shop around for the best prices in their area, and to make sure they and their passengers buckle up — every time. | High crude oil prices and supply chain disruptions caused by Hurricane Ivan are being cited by analysts as the main reasons the average price of gasoline has risen nationally, and price increases have been also found in Massachusetts, according to AAA Southern New England. AAA’s September 27 survey of prices in Massachusetts found self serve, regular unleaded averaging $1.889 per gallon, four cents more than last week. It is the first time that prices locally have increased more than one cent in any week since late May. A year ago at this time the average price was $1.729. Prices for self serve unleaded continue to have a wide range in the state, this week 26 cents from $1.749 to $2.019. AAA urges motorists to shop around for the best prices in their area.
